After a long teasing campaign, Maruti Suzuki has unveiled the 2022 Grand Vitara compact SUV. This marks the return of the Grand Vitara moniker and the compact SUV is essentially Maruti’s version of the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Reservations are accepted for a nominal amount of Rs 11,000 with a launch scheduled for September. Production is expected to begin in August.

Although it is the same as the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder under the skin, the Grand Vitara has its own identity via NEXA’s “crafted futurism” design language. By that we mean a different grille and mesh design up front, plus beefier NEXA-style three-element LED daytime running lights. There’s generous use of bling too, with a thick chrome strip connecting the DRL LEDs.

On the sides, apart from different alloy wheels, the Grand Vitara retains the muscular proportions of its Toyota counterpart. At the rear, the Grand Vitara gets connected taillights instead of split taillights, with slightly revised bumpers compared to its Toyota counterpart. There will be six monotone shades (Celestial Blue, Arctic White, Cave Black, Grandeaur Grey, Oppulent Red and Splendid Silver) three two-tone shades (Arctic White, Oppulent Red and Splendid Silver) to choose.

Inside, you’d be hard-pressed to find any differences between the Grand Vitara. But it gets soft-touch faux black materials on the dash, with gold accents throughout. That being said, you can also spec it with the Bordeaux-black theme as it is its Toyota counterpart.

There will be plenty of kit on board, including a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen, head-up display, 360-degree camera, ventilated front seats, digital driver display, wireless phone charger, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, connected car technology and a panoramic sunroof. The safety kit includes six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, hill start assist and descent control, 3-point seat belts and disc brakes on all wheels.

The main USP of the 2022 Grand Vitara is under the hood. Like the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, it will come with a 1.5-liter strong hybrid (the first Maruti to get a strong hybrid) and mild hybrid petrol engines. The mild-hybrid engine will get an AllGrip all-wheel-drive system with “Auto”, “Sport”, “Snow” and “Lock” drive modes. The strong hybrid option will use a front-wheel-drive system.

Here’s a detailed rundown of the SUV’s powertrain specs:
