Negative Supply has announced the successor to the Film Carrier MK1, the Pro Film Carrier 35. It is touted as an affordable and professional tool capable of scanning all 35mm film formats (including half frame, full frame and panoramic formats) in a single capture while maximizing film flatness.
According to the company, the new 35mm film scanner features smooth-rolling bearings, solid CNC-machined construction, and a savvy, modular suite of accessories, making the 35″ Pro Film Carrier the ultimate tool for digitizing 35mm film. Negative Supply also states that the Pro Film Carrier 35 represents the next generation of 35mm film carriers for digitizing film with a digital camera, as the pro-level carrier is packed with upgrades over the Film Carrier MK1 and is built to last.
Negative Supply states that this product has undergone the most extensive research and development process in its history.
“Building on the design philosophy and concept of the MK1, the Pro Film Carrier 35 represents film digitizing reinvented. Our primary goal was to include support for 35mm half-frame and panoramic formats ( alongside standard 35mm) in a single device. This is included as standard in every unit we produce,” the company explains.
“We listened to existing users when they asked us for certain features. A common request was for adjustable tensioners in the scan guides so your film wouldn’t “drift” as you advance the film through the carrier. These are preset at the factory during assembly and calibration. This makes automatic adjustments in post-processing much faster and provides professional-grade frame-by-frame consistency that commercial labs and institutions will rejoice.
The updated film scanner pro is built with a modular design that includes a replaceable internal cassette for future upgrades and accessories. It is capable of scanning 35mm half-frames all the way up to panoramas in a single capture using one of three custom masks for each format. At launch, it will include a full-edge scanning cassette with matching full-edge masks. The frame itself is solid machined aluminum and is compatible with the Pro Mount MK2 (with an updated adapter plate) as well as the 4×5 Light Source Basic (with a custom adapter plate).
The company also claims that the new Pro Film Carrier 35 features tighter, flatter, and smoother film advancement with an updated transport mechanism using more efficient rollers and a refined, smooth ride. The entire system is factory preset to accommodate film drift from frame to frame, ensuring users get consistent lines and framing across an entire roll of 35mm film.
With its launch, Negative Supply is releasing a set of 100 individually numbered limited edition Pro Film Carrier 35 models that feature brass contact points as well as a variety of accessories.
The Pro Film Carrier 35 is available from $399 for the standard edition and guidebook and up to $499 for the introductory edition with guidebook and full rim tape. A list of all options and accessories is available on the company’s website.
